Background of District Administration

Faridpur has a glorious past. The district was established in 1786. Some opine that the district was established in 1815 (Banglapedia). The area of the district is 2072.72 square kilometers. Faridpur has land borders with Rajbari, Gopalganj, Madaripur and Shariatpur districts, as well as riverine borders with Dhaka, Manikganj and Munshiganj districts in the Padma River, which forms northeastern boundary. Faridpur shares its borders with Rajbari and Manikganj in the North, with Gopalganj in the South, with Magura and Narail in the West and with Madaripur and Munshiganj in the East.

 

There are 4 Pourasabhas, 36 Wards, 92 Mahallas, 79 Unions and 1859 Villages in this district. There are 9 upazillas under this district. They are: Faridpur Sadar, Madhukhali, Boalmari, Alfadanga, Saltha, Nagarkanda, Bhanga, Sadarpur, Char Bhadrasan. Faridpur was a renowned and one of the most important districts during the British reign. This land is well known as the homeland of awlias, saints, politicians, and millions of good souls. Earlier, this district was called as “Fatehabad”. This district was named after the disciple of the Famous saint Mainuddin Chishti (Rhm), Shah Farid (Rhm). Though this district was established in 1786, its name was Jalalpur and the Head Office of this district was situated in Dhaka. Dhaka was separated from Jalalpur in 1807 and since then, this district has been being called as Faridpur and the Head Quarter has been established in Faridpur Town. The then district was constituted of 4 sub-districts then, which were Goaland, Faridpur Sadar, Madaripur and Gopalganj. Now Faridpur has been divided into five districts: Faridpur, Rajbari, Gopalganj, Madaripur and Shariatpur. The Farayezi Movement leaded by Haji Shariatullah got wide spread in this district. Once indigo was cultivated on the lands adjacent to the banks of the rivers Garai, Madhumati, Barasia, Chandana, Kumar etc. The two Main Indigo Factories were established in Alfadanga and Mirganj.

 

There were 52 indigo factories in this district. Dunloff was the Chief Manager. The Indigo Rebellion occurred in this district along with other districts, which was leaded by Dudu Mia.

 

Once upon a time, this district was a wetland, and the flooding of Padma made the lands fertile with silt. The district town is located at the bank of the river Kumar. Faridpur Pourasabha was established in 1869. The district town comprises of 9 Wards and 35 Mahallas. The area of the district town is 20.23 square kms.

 

Among the heritage of this district, the notable ones are: Gerda Mosque (Hijri 1013), Patrail Mosque (1493-1519), Satoir Mosque (1519), Basudeb Temple, Jagadbandhu’s Courtyard, Fatehabad Mint (1519-1532), Mathurapur Deol, Baishrashi Zamindar House, District Court Building (1889), Bhanga Munsef Court Building (1889) etc.
